Happy Wednesday Clearwater! ☀️
Welcome to today's edition of My Clearwater Scoop. Sometimes a newsletter issue isn't about events and trivia and lost pets, rather sometimes it's about something bigger.
Today we're dedicating this entire issue to one story, because it matters that much.
Clearwater is a beautiful city because of its green spaces, its wildlife, its neighborhoods, and the people who fight to protect them. But beautiful things don't protect themselves. The only way we keep what makes this city special is by showing up before decisions are made and not after.
Once a 70-acre piece of public land is handed over to private development, once the bulldozers roll and the habitat is gone, there is no taking it back. Hindsight is a painful thing.
Thursday night there is a community rally at The Landings and your presence could make all the difference.
This is that moment: the one where you either showed up or wished you had. 🌳🦅
As always…this newsletter exists because of this community. Thank you for being part of it.

A beloved Clearwater green space is under threat and the community is fighting back. The Landings Golf Club, a public 18-hole executive course on Keene Road, is at the center of a heated debate after a proposal emerged to redevelop the entire 70-acre property into a large sports and recreation complex. A community rally is happening Thursday June 11th at 6pm at The Landings Golf Course - details below.
What Is The Landings?
The Landings Golf Club has been a fixture in Clearwater since 1972. Designed by renowned golf course architect Ron Garl, the par-63 public course features nine par-3s and nine par-4s, making it accessible and enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. The land itself has deep roots in Clearwater history. Originally an airpark dating back to the 1930s, portions of the property were donated to the city by the Fugazzi family. The course is currently owned and operated by the family of PGA Tour pro John Huston and offers a driving range, pro shop, putting green, and lessons.
What Is Being Proposed?
A proposal has been put forward to redevelop the 70-acre site into a large sports complex. Potentially including a stadium with capacity for up to 5,000 spectators. The development would sit on what is currently public green space, and one of the proposed vehicle exits would run directly through Airport Drive, cutting through the surrounding residential neighborhood. Critics argue the project would bring significant noise, light, and traffic pollution to an area currently enjoyed by residents, golfers, wildlife, and families.
Why Residents Are Pushing Back
Neighbors and community members have raised serious concerns about the proposal on multiple fronts. The City of Clearwater would essentially be handing over public property for private development; something many residents believe should require a public referendum rather than a city decision alone. There are also practical concerns about whether a large sports complex would even be well-utilized, pointing to existing sports fields and courts around Clearwater that already see limited use.
Perhaps most powerfully, the green space supports local wildlife. A bald eagle has been spotted perched at The Landings. A powerful reminder that this land is home to protected species that would be displaced by the noise, light, and construction that comes with large-scale development. Once that habitat is gone, it doesn't come back.
Attend the Thursday Community Rally
The community is coming together to make their voices heard. If you care about protecting Clearwater's green spaces, public land, and neighborhood quality of life; PLEASE show up Thursday night.
📍 Location: The Landings Golf Course 📅 Date: Thursday June 11th ⏰ Time: 6:00 PM
This is your chance to stand alongside your neighbors and send a clear message to City Hall. Public green space belongs to the public.

🏖️ Clearwater Beach Water Temperature - Summer Is Here

If you've been waiting for the Gulf to warm up the wait is over. Clearwater Beach water temperatures have reached 81 degrees. Warm, clear, and perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or just wading in. Historically Gulf temperatures peak around 85-86 degrees in late summer so we're already well into comfortable swimming territory ahead of schedule.
