🏖️🤙 Clearwater Beach Wins This Summer! Here's Why Smart Floridians Are Heading West

If you've been scrolling social media this weekend you may have seen your friends on Florida's East Coast complaining about the beach. They're not being dramatic. Florida's Atlantic coastline is dealing with a full scale seaweed invasion, and Clearwater Beach just became the best kept secret in the state. Except we're about to tell everyone.

The East Coast Problem - It's Bad and Getting Worse…🤢

A massive surge of sargassum (a brown seaweed that smells like rotten eggs when it decomposes) has blanketed Miami Beach and much of Florida's Atlantic coastline. A recent University of South Florida study found at least 4 percent of the ocean's surface was covered with sargassum clumps in May alone.

When sargassum washes ashore it releases hydrogen sulfide gas (the same smell as rotten eggs) causing eye, nose and throat irritation. People with breathing conditions are especially sensitive. Beachgoers have been abandoning their plans entirely.

USF is predicting 2026 will be a major sargassum year with levels exceeding 75 percent of historical records. It's expected to get worse through June and July not better.

As one beachgoer put it, "Instead of sand in our toes, we've got weeds in our toes."

A few safety notes if you do encounter sargassum anywhere: don't handle it without rubber gloves as bacteria can breed in it, and be aware that jellyfish larvae can hide inside causing skin rashes and blisters.

The West Coast Good News - Clearwater Is Clear

While the East Coast is dealing with seaweed chaos Clearwater Beach and most of Florida's Gulf Coast just got a clean bill of health on red tide. Water testing over the past week found almost zero signs of Karenia brevis (the organism that causes harmful red tide blooms) anywhere around the state.

No respiratory irritation. No fish kill reports. No foul odors. Just clear warm Gulf water at a perfect 81 degrees.

The only trace readings were found offshore in Taylor County in Northwest Florida; nowhere near Clearwater. Southwest Florida and the entire East Coast were completely clear according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

What This Means For Clearwater This Summer

Here's the honest heads up…word is getting out. When East Coast beaches smell like rotten eggs and West Coast beaches are crystal clear and red tide free… people start driving west. Clearwater Beach may see increased traffic this summer as word spreads.

Our advice…go early, go on weekdays when possible, and enjoy what is shaping up to be one of the cleanest Gulf summers in recent memory.

🚨 Clearwater Police Shut Down Planned "Teen Takeover" Before It Started

Clearwater Beach remained safe and peaceful on June 10th thanks to quick action by the Clearwater Police Department. After learning on June 1st that a "Clearwater Beach Takeover" was being advertised online for June 10th, CPD's real-time operations center jumped into action.

Officers identified the parties involved and on June 5th issued a cease-and-desist order to the person circulating the post. Cancellation notices went up online the following day. CPD also increased law enforcement presence at the beach as a precaution.

"We wanted beach businesses and our visitors to know they were safe," said Chief Eric Gandy.

This follows a recent incident at Clearwater Beach that the community is well aware of. Chief Gandy credited local residents for stepping forward with information that helped CPD get ahead of this situation before it developed.

"Like us, they didn't want to see a repeat of what happened. Always encourage people to say something if they see something - that's exactly what happened here."

Clearwater Beach is open, safe, and ready for your summer. 🏖️

If you've been waiting for the Gulf to warm up the wait is over. Clearwater Beach water temperatures have reached 81 degrees. Warm, clear, and perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or just wading in. Historically Gulf temperatures peak around 85-86 degrees in late summer so we're already well into comfortable swimming territory ahead of schedule.
